With the hype of many people turning to a vegan diet it is important to know all the side effects of choosing this route as your diet.
There is no doubt that being a vegan is the best decision you can make when it comes to your health as it is categorized as one of the healthiest and preferred diet out there. However, the side effects of being a vegan can deter most people.
Well as you know I love telling the facts as they are since they will benefit my readers so today I will talk about the side effects of being a vegan.
By the way I have faced all of these but I would not choose any other diet due to the benefits I have gotten through this diet.
OK let’s start now.
1. Nutrition deficiency
Perhaps the most prominent side effect of being a vegan is having to deal with lack of full nutrients. I know this was a huge downfall for me when I started out as a vegan.
In one of my posts I did mention that if you do not take full nutrients you could have many disasters in your body. For the purpose of this post I will reiterate the nutrients that vegans normally lack.
Here is the list:
- Viatmin B12
The good news and irony is that there are a lot of vegan foods which you can choose from that have these nutrients. It is all about knowing them that is all.
Here is a list of ways to get these nutrients fully without resorting to supplements, which by the way should be the last resort for you.
- Vegan foods high in Calcium
- Vegan foods high in Iron
- Vegan foods high in protein
- Vegan foods high in vitamin B12
2. Fat loss
It goes without saying why most people who are looking to lose weight resort to a vegan diet to achieve this.
This is because the diet, in its nature, has less fact and since you are eating plant based food. However, some people still do use too much oil when cooking a vegan diet which can be unhealthy since it will increase your cholesterol levels.
I know when I started out on a vegan diet I lost a lot of body fat in fact at this moment my body fat is very minimal but I do make sure I have fat by cooking with proper oil.
If you are looking to increase your fat as a vegan you should focus on healthy vegan fat foods which will help in this regard such as avocado or Virgin olive oil.
3. Muscle loss
The same with fat loss, the vegan diet will tend to make you loss muscles in your body more specifically since you will not be eating enough protein.
I was affected by this at the start of my vegan journey but I quickly regained that because I know which foods to focus on to build muscles as a vegan.
The following are my top protein vegan foods to eat:
- Vegan protein bars
If you are looking to upper your protein drastically and continuously I highly recommend using great protein shake and you can check out my #1 recommendation.
4. releasing of unwanted odor
Releasing odor is one of the most embarrassing side effects for most vegans because it is generally something you have less control of.
The reason vegans release gas is due to the fiber content in the foods you are eating. This will happen the most when you are starting out in your vegan journey since the body will be adjusting.
The foods that normally have the most effect on this are beans so just be wary of this fact.
5. Society judgement
Besides the health side effects you will face you must also prepare for the fact that society and people around you will judge you and sometimes even test you in a bad way.
By bad way I mean they will think your diet is a joke and sometimes even slip something like meat in your vegan food (yep it happened to a colleague of mine a year ago).
I also had a huge judgment from my parents, family and friends when I started and I still am judged even though they know my decision to be vegan is purely for health reasons.
So yeah just be prepared.
Being a vegan comes with a lot of good and bad side effects so it is vital for a person who is decided to switch to this diet to know what they are putting themselves into.
When I started I had no idea about the vegan diet thus all the side effects of losing muscles, releasing gas and losing too much fat caught up with me.
However now I am happy I know a lot about the diet and I now live very well knowing all is good in my body.
If you are starting out as a vegan just make sure you are informed about the foods that you need such as vegan foods high in iron and B12 as this can save you a lot of stress and also your health.
Besides this health benefits you will also face society criticism as you start since most people do not understand the vegan diet so you need to have thick skin.
