Without further ado, let’s get started.

Is this a myth or the truth?

Let us first answer this question here. So does weight loss actually cause hair loss.

Well according to many studies and science we can see that this is the truth. The truth is not a side effect of diet pills or supplements.

It is also not an effect of your specific diet too so you can rest assured that you can continue with your current diet.

The facts are more with how you use your diet and I will talk about these factors in the next few sections

The rate of weight loss

Does weight loss cause hairloss?

According to billingsgazette weight loss rate has a huge effect on hair developed. It is said that the hair development is in two stages which are the following:

  • The Anagen stage

The anagen is the hair growth development stage which last about a month.

  • The Telogen stage

This stage which lasts about 100 days is known is the resting stage of the follicles and is the last stage of hair development.

After these two stages are finished the hair growth goes to falling out stage.

The whole process of hair growth is known as telogen effluvium.

When this stage is made to happen fast it can cause hair loss and weight loss is one of the ways which cause this problem.

How does this happen?

This happens because of lack of nutrients. Usually when you are losing weight at a fast rate some parts of your body tend to not get enough nutrients.

Your body will fuel more of the important organs first like the heart, brain, limbs, etc.

Hair is usually the last part that the body feeds so that is the reason which happens.

So now let us look the nutrients which have an effect.

Protein effectDoes weight loss cause hairloss?

When people lose weight they usually do not get enough protein in the body. Protein is especially important for growth due to the fact that hair follicles are made mostly of protein as stated by HealthLine.

The main problem is that most people who eat protein still exercise a lot so they end up not having enough protein since their body has used more protein than a regular person who doesn’t exercise regularly.

This is why it you should always have the recommended protein content which is 8 grams per 20 pounds of weight.

Of course of you are exercising (athlete or trying to lose weight) you must add more protein to compensate for the broken muscles.

Here are some best foods you could take as someone who is losing weight for high protein consumption:

  • Nuts
  • Avocado
  • Lean meat
  • Tofu
  • Spinach

Zinc effect

Another important nutrient which is usually neglected is zinc. Zinc is the main nutrient after protein because of its powerful functions for hair growth.

Zinc is responsible for hair tissue growth and also for repair as also indicated by HealthLine.

Not only is zinc responsible for growth but one of the main functions of zinc is that it keeps the oil glands around the hair follicles working well.

Here are the best foods you can eat to use zinc:Does weight loss cause hairloss?

  • Legumes
  • Seeds
  • Whole grains
  • Poultry
  • Red meat

Iron effect

Iron is again another third important nutrient although not as important as protein and zinc.

This because, according to Huffpost iron can only have the effect when it is heavily needed like when you have iron deficiency which have developed into a chronic stage such as iron deficiency anemia.

The body neglects giving iron to your hair when it has reached this stage as it sees it as a less important organ in the body compared to others.

lets look at the best food sources for this nutrient:Does weight loss cause hairloss?

  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Dark leafy vegetables (if you are vegan)

Fatty acids

The Natural Medicine Journal states that fatty acids (especially Omega 3 fatty acids) are needed to give your follicles anti inflammatory essentials.

This may seem less significant but trust me the properties it gives are huge as it protects that fair and the skin around it so it can grow well and with no interruption.

Here are the best foods for this:Does weight loss cause hairloss?

  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Nuts
  • Seeds

What is the best course to take?

As you have see that what causes hair loss for weight loss is not specifically a certain weight loss program or diet but how the weight loss is implemented.

Another aspect is not taking into account all the nutrients needed for your body which will also be mostly needed by the hair.

This then leaves you with many options when it comes to choosing a weight loss programs and you can check my list of programs I have reviewed ( Good and bad)…

The important thing is to take weight loss gradually and avoid systems which say will make you lose fast.

Final thoughts

Losing weight is one of the most important thing which people are looking for but most people end up looking for quick solutions.

This because a problem because this can cause many problems s which can have an adverse effect on your body effects like the hair loss.

The reason is because your body ends up not getting many essential nutrients like the following:

  • Protein
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Fatty acids

These can be found in many foods such as nuts and seeds which can be included in your weight loss program.

The best thing is to look at weight loss as a long term process so that you will not have hair problems.

I really learned so much about weight loss and our hair from your article, I must admit I never gave it much thought about my hair when I was losing weight too fast from my health problem.

Luckily I still have my hair and I have my weight problem in control, I have seen the product you recommended Tofu from time to time but I have never been brave enough to try it. I was wondering what is in Tofu, and I thank you for such an informational article

That was a great read man. I was worried when I first time started loosing hair and I was on some rigorous diet. It was made by me without consulting any expert. So it lacked a lot of different vitamins and minerals needed for the proper balance, which in the end made me loose a little bit of my hair.

I will definitely bookmark your blog because it has some great information about healthy lifestyle.
