When it comes to any diet there are normally different types of characters which fit in. This is also the case for the vegan diet.
In the vegan diet there are 3 types of vegans and knowing your type can be somewhat helpful in your quest to a better life.
When I started the vegan diet I literally had no idea what I was doing let alone what type of vegan I am but over years I have been able to know all of this.
The vegan diet lifestyle is increasingly becoming popular as most people are looking for better ways to live and eat and having the knowledge can set your path well.
Look at how many meat shops in London are turning and supporting veganism.
Without further ado let me start with the post.
1. The “vegan when I want to ” type
When it comes to this one I have to say that I have been part of this group for a long time and it was very hard to get out.
In fact to this day I sometimes do happen to fit to this category. However, there is a reason for this.
My reason for turning vegan was purely related to health (unclogging my heart arteries). You can read my story here.
These type of people are normally change from being vegan to being omnivore or other diets just for certain reasons. Here are the common reasons for this:
- The need to add protein in the consumption
This one was one of the main reasons of me changing to eat chicken at times because I needed protein in my body as I was told by the doctor I need more protein in my body.
This usually happened when I have not gotten enough protein for the day which happens due to being busy during the day.
Just to let you know, you do not need to have non-vegan food for protein you have plenty of choice and that is what I had to learn over the years.
For example if you find that you are too busy you can basically have protein shake like Vegansmart protein powder shake which can replace your meals even.
- Not finding enough food
This is one of the most common reasons people cheat the vegan diet and to some extent I do not blame them. This is more so in some countries.
- Needing more nutrients
I also fell into this one when, for instance, I needed more vitamin B12 for this to happen and it was one I struggled for a long time to control too.
If you are a vegan or have read my previous posts you will know that being vegan you usually do not get enough of most nutrients such as Calcium, vitamin D and Vitamin B12.
Having said this remember that you have vegan foods which you can use to get these nutrients from and I also have written articles for these.
2. The ” Vegan beginner” type
There is also a vegan beginner who has no clue at all in terms of what to do when it comes to finding vegan food.
Yes, we all start at this point and if you have no one to guide you or any information about the vegan diet you can literally starve your body to death with depriving it of nutrients.
fortunately for you I have vegan guide for beginners which talks about all the things you need to know when you get started.
Basically if you follow this guide you will be happy to know that you have all the chance to be a good vegan.
3. The ” thinking I have it all under control vegan”
Here is another funny type of vegan that thinks they have all the information.
I guess we as vegans all get to this stage at some point too only discover that you actually do not have it under control.
For me this happened as a wake up call when I went to the hospital and I was told I was lacking some vitamins even though I had thought I am eating a well-balanced meal.
4. ” The professional vegan” type
I guess well as vegans are striving towards this or at least should be aiming for this part. So what is a professional vegan?
Well this is basically when you know exactly what it takes to be a vegan and having all the nutrients and knowledge for eating and leaving vegan.
This does not mean just having the knowledge but also having the actions to back these things up so that you are actually living the vegan life 100%.
I am not 100% at this point myself as I do fall short at times so I wouldn’t consider myself at this stage for these reasons.
If you are vegan you will surely go through different phases which will turn you into a veterans vegan.
There are 4 types of vegans and they:
- “The vegan when I want to” type
- “The think I have it under control” type
- “the vegan beginner” type
- “The professional vegan” type.
The aim of all vegans is to be professional vegans (whether they know it or not) as this is the ideal phase to ensure you live healthy on the vegan diet and most importantly to sustain it.
So when you start or as you are a vegan just make sure you know which category you fit in.
I hope you enjoyed my article and I hope it was fruitful. If you have any questions or comments to add you are more than welcome to add them below.
